Fazenda Recreio is an iconic estate in the Vale da Grama, São Paulo, that has been managed by the Carvalho Dias family for five generations since 1890. Currently overseen by agricultural engineer Diogo Dias Teixeira de Macedo, the farm is a world-class example of balancing deep-rooted tradition with a commitment to modern innovation. This dedication to excellence has made the farm a frequent finalist and winner of the Cup of Excellence, including a prestigious 1st place finish in 2004. The connection between this farm, itys people and our importing partners at Osito Coffee is already 12 years strong.
This specific Catuai lot was naturally processed—capturing the classic Brazilian sweetness—before undergoing Ethyl Acetate (EA) decaffeination. Often called the "Sugar Cane" process, this method uses natural Ethyl Acetate (which amongst other sources is also derived from sugarcane) to gently remove caffeine while preserving the coffee's original structural integrity and flavour profile.
Social Kontext
Fazenda Recreio operates as a highly organized community, providing 68 houses equipped with essential amenities for its 45 permanent employees and their families. The estate goes beyond basic housing by promoting sports, health, and spiritual life through an on-site soccer field, a health post, and a church. These high living standards ensure that the specialized labour required for the farm's manual operations is supported by a healthy and stable local community.
Economic Kontext
The farm’s economic model is built on unwavering consistency and traceability. Because the region's steep topography prevents the use of machinery, all farming activities are carried out manually, from meticulous cultivation to the fabric-harvesting of fruits at peak ripeness. This labor-intensive approach ensures high-quality yields that fetch specialty premiums, bypassing the "volume-only" market. Every lot produced at Recreio is fully traceable from the moment it is harvested to the moment it is loaded for export.
Environmental Kontext
Environmental stewardship is a core value at Recreio, which features extensive native forests and a rich variety of local flora and fauna. The farm is currently engaged in a dedicated program for the recovery of numerous springs and riverbanks. Sustainability is not just a management practice but a community effort; the farm provides environmental conservation classes and teaches sustainability concepts to all employees and their families.
