Frailesca is a community lot harvested by 24 diverse communities across the Sierra Madre mountains in Chiapas. Named after the broader agricultural region that serves as a gateway to the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve, this coffee is a collective tribute to the cloud forests and the families who protect them. The unique microclimate of these high-altitude "edible forests" results in a cup that is as vibrant as the Quetzal bird that calls them home.
Social Kontext
The Frailesca region faces a stark reality, with poverty affecting over 72% of the population. Ensambles Cafés Mexicanos, our importer for this coffee, addresses these challenges as one specialized initiative within the broader Bios Comunidad Sustentable. This "impact ecosystem" functions as a social sculpture where various branches connect to regenerate life in the region: Ensambles Cafés Mexicanos creates market access; the Instituto Bios Terra (IBT) provides technical agronomic knowledge; the COFEMO feminist collective empowers indigenous women; and Bios Lilá Montessori provides conscious education for the children of coffee communities. By integrating these social, educational, and agricultural efforts, they foster a holistic transformation of the territory.
Economic Kontext
Economic resilience is built through transparency and direct market access. Ensambles Cafés Mexicanos acts as both the exporter and importer, removing unnecessary intermediaries and paying up to 38% above local prices. In 2025, their network supported 1,218 coffee-growing families—a 63% increase from the previous cycle. By using mobile laboratories and permanent field technicians who speak indigenous languages, they bridge the gap between smallholders and international markets, ensuring that quality is recognized and rewarded fairly.
Environmental Kontext
Environmental work here is led by the Instituto Bios Terra (IBT), a research center focused on regenerative and biodynamic agriculture. Rather than the agribusiness monocultures spreading elsewhere in Chiapas, 100% of these farms are traditional polyculture systems. These "edible forests" combine coffee with fruit and shade trees, which foster biodiversity and act as natural buffers against climate change. To ensure future security, a tripartite insurance model—funded by the producer, the importer, and the buyer—is being developed to protect farmers from climate shocks.
