This coffee is a blend of two remarkable coffees from the Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka state of India. While we typically focus on single-origin coffees, this lot presents a unique case where the definition of a blend comes under scrutiny—it is both a blend of two estates (Gatadahally and Narmada) and a single-origin coffee from the same region. The result is a rich, nutty, and sweet cup with a creamy mouthfeel, reminiscent of caramelized nut brittle and bittersweet chocolate.
Social Kontext
This blend is a story of two dedicated individuals and their families. Gatadahally Estate, situated in the Malnad region, is a woman-run farm with a legacy spanning over 200 years, now managed by the 7th generation of the Uday family, Swaroop Balakrisha Uday. Similarly, Narmada Estate, located in the Kudremukh range, is run by Manohar Shetty. His commitment to coexisting with nature is a guiding principle, as he encourages his workers to accept crop damage from the abundant wildlife on the estate.
Economic Kontext
The two estates demonstrate a long-term commitment to quality that translates into economic sustainability. The Uday family's two-century legacy at Gatadahally speaks to a successful and generational model of coffee farming. Meanwhile, Manohar Shetty's successful transition to organic practices at Narmada has increased vermicompost production and ensures a higher-value, eco-friendly product. Both farms' focus on premium-quality washed coffee adds value to their harvest, supporting the economic health of these historic estates.
Environmental Kontext
Both Gatadahally and Narmada are true biodiversity hotspots within the Western Ghats. The estates' forest-like canopy of ancient native trees provides a home for a rich variety of flora and fauna, including the abundant wildlife at Narmada such as Indian Gaur and spotted deer. This is no accident: Gatadahally avoids the use of herbicides and pesticides to preserve its ecosystem, while Narmada has established water harvesting ponds and promotes a balanced relationship with the natural environment. Their shared dedication to these practices ensures the preservation of the land for generations to come.
Processing
The coffee from both estates is washed, a process designed to highlight the coffee's inherent qualities. Ripe cherries are hand-picked, pulped, and fermented in water before being thoroughly washed and sun-dried on patios. This meticulous method ensures a clean and consistent cup profile that truly represents its origin.
