This incredible coffee comes to us from the Sesean Matallo village in Toraja, nestled in the highlands of Sulawesi, Indonesia, a testament to the power of community and the vision of Ditha Tandipau and the 26 women farmers she leads. Founded in 2023, the Sesean Suloara Women’s Farmer Group is an inspiring example of women coming together to strengthen their families' economies and secure their independence through coffee. Expect a clean, vibrant cup that speaks to the dedication behind every bean.
Social Kontext
The Sesean Matallo women's farmer group grew organically from regular social gatherings and a shared commitment to mutual cooperation in agricultural activities. They recognized the immense strength in unity, especially when dealing with the government and other external parties. By organizing, they've not only gained access to vital technical knowledge in coffee production, but also improved their skills, leading to higher incomes. Being a collective makes it far easier to secure support and facilities from various organizations, whether it's for education, infrastructure, market access, or capital. This supportive environment also fosters a network where members can stay updated on market trends and sustainability initiatives within the coffee value chain, maximizing their potential as agricultural producers. This women's group is part of the larger MTP cooperative in Toraja, which boasts over 500 members.
Environmental Kontext
The women of Sesean Matallo are proactively addressing the challenges of changing rain seasons due to climate change. In collaboration with exporter Adri from Ontosoroh, they are planning and preparing the plot for an entirely new, resilient drying facility. This new infrastructure will feature raised drying beds, a solid roof, and effective ventilation, ensuring their coffee can be processed consistently regardless of unpredictable weather patterns.
Economic Kontext
By forming a united front, the Sesean Matallo group has empowered its members to improve their coffee production skills, directly translating to higher incomes and greater economic stability for their families. Their collective approach also provides better access to resources and markets, ensuring a more sustainable livelihood for these dedicated women farmers.
Processing
This beautiful coffee undergoes a washed process. Only the ripest cherries are meticulously picked, then fermented for 12 hours. After a thorough washing, the coffee is carefully dried in open air for 15 days, resulting in a clean and bright profile.
