Our first Kenyan coffee - we have been waiting for a Kenyan to come along that gives you a ‘typical’ Kenyan cup profile: tart but balanced acidity, deep chocolate notes and a pleasant roundedness with a hit of umami. In our opinion this lovely coffee fits the bill. We highly recommend you try it!

Background Info:

Susan Mwihaki is the owner of Samwa Coffee. Her farm is situated near the town of Kitale in Trans Nzoia County in North West Kenya near Mt. Elgon and the border to Uganda. Susan is a trained medical doctor but when her mother passed in 2017, she decided to return to and take over the family farm. With her analytical mind and her passion and love for coffee, she set out to improve processes and quality and invest time training local farmers in her area, working with resident coffee experts. Thanks to the efforts she put into her work, Susan has been able to increase productivity and offer formal and informal work to women in the region. The fertilisers used on the farm are primarily organic and home made from animal manure produced by sheep and cattle that are also kept for meat production.

Susan is a member of a group of female coffee producers known as North of the Rift Women in Coffee, initiated by Gloria Gummerus ok Sakami Coffee. In Kenya, like in many other coffee growing countries, the coffee sector is still very much male-dominated. As an  association of women, the North of the Rift women have come together to produce great coffee and access the market as a group. They collaborate to face challenges related to cultural beliefs, male ownership of land, and lack of access to finances. By highlighting these challenges and sharing their experiences, they inspire other women in the coffee sector and beyond to come together, work collaboratively and overcome barriers to growth and success.
